How can I improve the taste of store bought yellow cake mix?

I saw this recipe from Paula Dean and it called said mix up pineapple juice & sugar as a glaze and to add coconut flakes. I like the idea but honestly I'm not such a big fan of coconuts and I feel like the pineapple juice & sugar are going to be a little too much. My Aunt actually made a cake one time that had a pinappley & coco nutty taste to it and I loved it, but sadly I never got it. So I was wondering if I could actually mix some pineapple juice and perhaps some coconut extract in to the cake mix to give it a little zing.
